Premier Oregon Ceramicist Don Sprague is perhaps best known for his ceramic
lanterns. One of his first lanterns was inspired by a piece that his
sister asked him to make so that she could keep a lantern burning in her
garden in memory of their late mother. The Smithsonian American Art
Museum features one of his lanterns, such as the one pictured here (

He
is a ceramics instructor at George Fox University, and is regarded
highly for his ability to create exceptional quality, well-constructed,
functional pieces that exhibit a recognizable style all his own. Bowls,
vases, mugs and yes, even lanterns similar to the one acquired by the
Smithsonian American Art Museum can be viewed and purchased at the
Newport Bay Street Gallery in Newport, Oregon.
